A sober life isn't just the absence of substances — it's the presence of skills that addiction interrupted. At Heal Space Toledo, we treat life skills as core curriculum, not extra credit.
Here are some of the practical skills our residents build.
1. Budgeting and saving
Recovery often coincides with rebuilding finances. Residents practice tracking spending, opening accounts, setting savings goals, and managing income from work.
2. Cooking and nutrition
A working kitchen and shared meal planning teach more than recipes. Residents learn how food affects mood, sleep, and cravings — and how to feed themselves on a budget.
3. Time management
Showing up — for work, for meetings, for one another — is itself a skill. Residents build it through daily structure and gentle accountability.
4. Communication and conflict
Living with others surfaces real conflict. We see this as opportunity. Residents learn to name what they need, listen without defending, and resolve issues directly.
5. Self-advocacy
Calling a doctor. Asking for a raise. Setting a boundary with family. These are big life skills — and we practice them.
6. Emotional regulation
Many residents arrive having used substances to manage emotions. Naming feelings, pausing before reacting, and reaching for support replaces that pattern over time.
Why this matters
Recovery rates increase dramatically when people have the practical skills to live the life they're choosing. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, our mission is to make those skills accessible to anyone in Toledo who needs them.

FAQ
Do I have to take classes? No. We teach life skills through daily life — not lectures. Real conversations, real practice, real support.
What if I already have these skills? Then you'll be a powerful peer for someone who doesn't. That's recovery, too.
